Comprehensive Mycotoxin Testing for New Jersey Homes and Buildings

Mycotoxin testing identifies the specific toxins mold produces, which standard mold testing does not detect. GreenWorks Environmental provides mycotoxin sampling across New Jersey for property owners with known mold exposure, water-damaged buildings, or unexplained health concerns. Here you will find what our mycotoxin panel covers, what is included in a sampling visit, and how the results are returned.

Mycotoxins Are an Emerging Health Crisis That Most Labs Cannot Test For

While everyone talks about mold testing, the real danger lies in what most labs cannot detect. Mycotoxin exposure comes from water-damaged buildings as readily as from contaminated food, and these toxic byproducts of mold are an emerging health concern that standard laboratories are not equipped to handle.

As mold survivors ourselves, our team understands the hidden dangers that mold and its byproducts pose to your health. Do not rely on outdated mold tests that only indicate whether mold is present. Our advanced testing reveals exactly which harmful toxins you are breathing in and coming into contact with.

Why Our Microbial Analysis Is Different

Most labs test for 5 to 10 mycotoxins. We test for over 40.

This is the critical difference. Traditional mold testing only identifies if mold spores are present, and basic mycotoxin analysis checks a handful of common toxins. GreenWorks Environmental runs a comprehensive analysis for 40+ different mycotoxins, including:

  • Aflatoxin B1

  • Aflatoxin B2

  • Aflatoxin G1

  • Aflatoxin G2

  • Acetyldeoxynivalenol

  • Chaetoglobosin A

  • Citrinin

  • Diacetoxyscirpenol

  • Deoxynivalenol

  • Fumonisin B1

  • Fumonisin B2

  • HT-2 Toxin

  • Mycophenolic Acid

  • Neosolaniol

  • Ochratoxin A

  • Patulin

  • Roridin E

  • Satratoxin G

  • Satratoxin H

  • Stachybotrylactam

  • Sterigmatocystin

  • T2/Trichothecenes (multiple variants)

  • Verrucarin A

  • Zearalenone

And more.

This emerging field of mycotoxin analysis is changing our understanding of mold illness,
and most contractors and labs are not equipped to provide this level of testing.

What’s Included in Our Mycotoxin Sampling?

Basic Spore Trap Analysis

Identification and enumeration of fungal spores for all brands of spore traps, including Allergen-co-D, Micro-5, Z5, and Air-O-Cell cassettes.

Identification Analysis

Identification and semi-quantitative enumeration from tape, Bio-Tape, swab, or bulk samples.

Dust Mite Allergen Testing

Semi-quantitative analysis of dust for the presence of mite allergens.

Expanded Spore Trap Analysis

Basic analysis plus total dander, fiber, and pollen counts.

Expanded Direct Mold Identification

Basic direct mold identification plus quantitative spore counts in spores per square inch.

Total Particle Analysis

Identification of pollen, fibers, dander, and any other discernible particles.

Additional Valued Services

Fungal and Bacterial Culture

Identification and enumeration of mold and bacteria from air, swab, and bulk samples. Two- to four-business-day turnaround for bacteria, and five to seven days for mold.

PCR (Polymerase Chain Reaction)

Identification of select bacteria including Legionella, plus fungi, viruses, and parasites, using DNA analysis rather than culture growth.

Why Choose GreenWorks for Mycotoxin Sampling

Testing for 40+ Mycotoxins, Not 5

Most labs test 5 to 10 common toxins. Our panel covers all four groups: Aflatoxins, Ochratoxins, Zearalenones, and Trichothecenes. A narrow panel returns clean results in a contaminated building.

Advanced LCMS Laboratory Analysis

LC-MS/MS quantifies individual compounds rather than confirming something is present. The sampling procedure determines whether the results are meaningful, as mycotoxins are often unevenly distributed.

Mold Survivors Reading Your Results

Our team has lived in contaminated buildings. As Certified Mycotoxin Investigators, we read a panel against the property it came from rather than in isolation.

Not Sure What Is Actually in Your Air?

Standard mold testing tells you spores are present. A mycotoxin panel tells you which toxins, at what concentration, and where they are coming from. Call GreenWorks Environmental and get the analysis most labs cannot run.

Frequently Asked Questions

What Are the Four Main Types of Mycotoxins?

Mycotoxins include Aflatoxins, Ochratoxins, Zearalenones, and Trichothecenes. Aflatoxins are produced by Aspergillus fungi and appear in spoiled food and moldy grains. Trichothecenes come from Stachybotrys chartarum, the species behind most toxic mold concerns. Mycotoxins originate from both food and environmental molds.

What Laboratory Methods Detect Mycotoxins?

Common lab testing methods include ELISA, HPLC, and LC-MS/MS. Rapid strip tests such as Lateral Flow Devices give fast qualitative results but no quantification. LC-MS/MS is the method behind reliable test results at the concentrations that matter, which is what our mycotoxin panel uses.

How Do Environmental Conditions Affect Mycotoxin Levels?

Conditions during growth and storage heavily influence contamination. Warmth and moisture drive production, which is why water-damaged buildings and improperly stored grains both produce them. Regulatory bodies enforce maximum tolerance levels for mycotoxins in food and feed for the same reason.

Do Mycotoxins Affect Pets and Animals?

Yes. Mycotoxins cause respiratory distress in animals and serious health issues in pets, who spend more time on floors where dust and settled toxins concentrate. Ingestion is a route pets face that people generally do not, since animals groom contaminated fur.

What Does a Positive Mycotoxin Result Mean?

It confirms specific toxins are present in the sampled environment and at what concentration. Levels above certain thresholds indicate potential health risks worth acting on. The result identifies what to remediate, and it gives a healthcare provider environmental evidence rather than a symptom list.

Can Mycotoxin Testing Give Me a Clinical Diagnosis?

No. We sample buildings, not people. Urine and blood serum testing for mycotoxin metabolites in the body is ordered through a doctor, and urine mycotoxin tests are not FDA-approved for clinical use. Environmental results give your healthcare provider something concrete to work from.

What Symptoms Are Associated With Mycotoxin Exposure?

Occupants of water-damaged buildings commonly report brain fog, fatigue, respiratory symptoms, and recurring infections. Chronic mycotoxin exposure has been associated with immune suppression, and people with compromised immune systems report effects at levels others can tolerate. Symptoms belong with a physician; the building belongs with us.

Is There Occupational Risk From Mycotoxins at Work?

Yes. Workplace exposure in damp buildings is an occupational safety concern, and workers in agriculture, grain handling, and food processing face ingestion and inhalation risks that the medical community has documented for decades. Commercial buildings with water damage carry the same environmental exposure as a home.

How Long Do Test Results Take?

Turnaround depends on the analysis ordered. Fungal and bacterial cultures return in two to four business days for bacteria and five to seven days for mold. LC-MS mycotoxin panels take longer, and we tell you the timeline before sampling rather than after.

Should I Use a DIY Mycotoxin Test Kit?

Consumer test kits detect a narrow range of toxins and offer no interpretation. Proper sampling procedure is vital because mycotoxins are unevenly distributed, and a sample from the wrong place produces a clean result in a contaminated building.

Are Mycotoxins Destroyed by Cleaning?

No. Mycotoxins survive standard washing, freezing, and cooking processes, and surface cleaning a building does not remove them either. That durability is why testing after remediation matters, and why removing visible growth is not the same as removing the toxins.
